About Bloomfield, New Jersey
- The land was originally purchased from the Yantecaw, a subtribe of the Lenni-Lenape Indians.
- In 1849, Bloomfield was one of the first towns in New Jersey to approve the Free School Act and utilize taxes for education.
- In the 1830’s Bloomfield held a diverse community of industries including: six gristmills, two cotton factories, five sawmills, four copper mills, three paper mills, one paint mill, two calico print works, three woolen mills, several shoe factories and seventeen merchants.
- In 1812 Bloomfield separated from Newark to become an independent township.
