About Hunterdon County New Jersey
Hunterdon County has been in existence for over 275 years. “Honest John Hart”, the famous Revolutionary War hero and signer of the Declaration of Independence, made his home in Hunterdon County. The first courthouse and jail was built for the county in 1720 and located in Trenton. One of the unique features of the historic Hunterdon County Courthouse is the bell that resides in its cupola was originally rung to notify the county if a verdict had been met or when court was in session. There have been several relocations and re-buildings of the courthouse since there have been several fires which destroyed it. There was much debate in regard to the historic courthouse in the late 1990’s and it was discussed that the county was in need of a larger courthouse. By 1996 the building was completed and includes 5 court rooms with the potential space to add up to 4 more as well as offices for the Judges, Prosecutor, Family, Criminal and Civil Case Management Units, Trial Court Administration, Probation Department, Law Library, Grand Jury Suite, Sheriff’s Office and Surrogate’s Court.
