About Mercer County New Jersey
Mercer County was formed on February 22, 1838 and named after Army General Hugh Mercer. It was formed from portions of Hunterdon, Burlington and Middlesex counties. During the Revolutionary War President George Washington traveled back and forth across Mercer County in the Second Battle of Trenton and the Battle of Princeton. Currently it is the home of the New Jersey state capital Trenton and Princeton University. The county has a total square mileage of 224 of which 4 square miles are water. Mercer County has a county executive as well as a seven person Board of Chosen Freeholders who votes on budgets and legislative policies for the county.
