About Union County New Jersey
Throughout the 15th and 17th centuries Dutch and English settlers were drawn to Union County due to its easy access to the Atlantic Ocean. The Lenni Lenapi Indians occupied this area and helped the settlers with the development of the land. The Elizabethtown Purchase in 1664 led to the first English settlement in New Jersey. Elizabethtown was laid out near the Union County courthouse. Elizabeth was the port of entry and first seat of New Jersey government that lead to a thriving county. To date Union County is 105 square miles and has a population of approximately 543,976 citizens. Union County is governed by a nine member Board of Chosen Freeholders.
