About West Orange, New Jersey
- West Orange, previously known as the Mountain Society, was founded in 1862 from the smaller town of Fairmount but the name West Orange was not used until later in 1863.
- It was on April 10, 1863 by an act of the New Jersey State Legislature that they officially created the town of West Orange.
- In 1667 a formal treaty was signed between Robert Treat and the Hackensack Indians for the purchase of a tract of land on the banks of the Passaic River.
- In 1678 a second purchase of land was made from the Winacksop and Shenacktos Indians who were owners of the great Mountain known as Watchung.
- West Orange is the home of renowned inventor Thomas Edison.
- The town may only be 150 years old but the earliest settler arrived here nearly one hundred years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
