People tend to think that New Jersey labor lawyers are the same as a New Jersey employment lawyer.

These two different areas of law (labor and employment) are generally grouped together as being one in the same.  However, the two different practice areas couldn’t be more different and you typically won’t find a labor attorney who handles employment law and vice versa. New Jersey labor lawyers typically handles matters involving public and private unions.  They usually only represent one sided (either management of union).  A labor lawyer will handle disputes, contract negotiations, arbitrations and any other issues arising between the employment and the union.

New Jersey employment lawyers typically handles matter involving employees and employers not involving a union.  Employment lawyers will handle issues involving the New Jersey and Federal discrimination, harassment, wage and hour, whistleblower and other employment law issues.  These types of disputes are typically handled in a litigation (absent an arbitration agreement).
