About Cape May County New Jersey
Cape May County was originally inhabited by the Tuckahoe and Kechemeche Indians. In 1620 the Dutch sent over three ships to explore Delaware and New York. During this voyage is where Cape May was originally named “Cape Mey” after its ships leader Cornelius Jacobsen Mey. Its name was later changed to the English spelling “May”. The first settlement in Cape May County was around 1685 and established as a whaling and fishing community. As the whaling industry diminished settlers refocused their energies on farming and agriculture which is still prominent today. Many legends talk about Cape May County and pirates including the infamous Captain Kidd who by legend supposedly buried his treasure within the county.
